Terms of Service

These terms cover your use of Trivia Engine: the website at triviaengine.dev, the API at api.triviaengine.dev and the trivia questions and data they provide (together, "the Service"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to them.

1. Your account and API keys

  • You need an account to use the API. Give us an email address you control; we use it to sign you in and to contact you about the Service.
  • Keep your API key secret. You're responsible for all use of your key. If it's exposed, regenerate it from your dashboard.
  • One account per person or organisation. Don't create extra accounts to get around plan limits.

2. Plans, billing and cancellation

  • Paid plans are billed monthly in advance through our payment processor, Stripe. Prices are shown on the pricing page and may change with at least 30 days' notice.
  • You can upgrade, downgrade or cancel at any time from your dashboard. Upgrades take effect immediately, with the difference charged pro rata. Cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing period.
  • Fees are non-refundable, except where the law requires otherwise.
  • If a payment fails and isn't resolved, your account moves to the Free plan.
  • Each plan's limits (API calls per day, questions per call, calls per minute and unique questions per week) are part of the plan. Requests beyond them are refused, not charged.

3. What you may do with the questions

While your account is in good standing, we grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to:

  • use questions received through the API in your own apps, games, websites and products, shown to your users;
  • use them for live events, such as pub quizzes, trivia nights and team games, including printed materials for those events;
  • keep copies of questions you've received, as needed to run your product. They remain covered by these terms.

4. What you may not do

  • Resell, sublicense or redistribute the questions or data as a collection, dataset, API or question bank, or let others extract them from your product in bulk.
  • Use the Service to build a competing trivia database or API.
  • Scrape the website, or try to get around plan limits, including by rotating keys or accounts.
  • Use the questions or data to train or fine-tune machine-learning models, unless your written agreement with us allows it.
  • Interfere with or overload the Service, probe it for vulnerabilities, or access it other than through the documented API.
  • Use the Service for anything unlawful.

5. Ownership

The questions, answers, player statistics and the Service are owned by Trivia Engine and its licensors. Apart from the licence in section 3, these terms don't transfer any rights to you. If you send us feedback or suggestions, we may use them freely.

6. Availability and changes

We work to keep the Service available and accurate, but we don't guarantee uninterrupted access, or that every question, answer or statistic is error-free. We may change, add or remove features, endpoints and questions. We'll give reasonable notice of changes that significantly affect paid plans. Uptime commitments are only available under a separate written agreement.

7. Suspension and termination

You can stop using the Service and close your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access, including revoking API keys, if you breach these terms, misuse the Service or don't pay. Where reasonable, we'll tell you first. When access ends, the licence in section 3 ends too, except for questions already printed or used at events.

8. Disclaimer and limitation of liability

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent the law allows, Trivia Engine isn't liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost profits, revenue or data. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

9. Privacy

We store your email address, your account and plan details, and records of your API usage, to run the Service and enforce plan limits. Payments are handled by Stripe, and we never see or store card details. We send email through our email provider, Resend. The website uses Google Analytics, which sets cookies, to understand how visitors use it. It receives page addresses, without any query strings, and general device and browser information. We don't sell your information.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If a change is material, we'll give at least 14 days' notice by email or on the website before it takes effect. Continuing to use the Service after that means you accept the updated terms.
